Tawny owls are nocturnal birds of prey. They are mainly active at night. They are medium sized and roughly the same size as a woodpigeon. They have dark eyes.
A baby owl is called an owlet.
Owls have a very bendy neck and can turn their heads 270 degrees to look around.
They live and hunt in woodland and their short rounded wings make barely a sound.
They have big eyes, good eyesight and exceptional hearing. Their ears are asymmetrically placed which helps them locate their prey. Tawny owls often use holes in trees as nests. They eat small mammals like mice and rabbits but also bats and earthworms.
They often hide away and sleep in their nests during the day.
